Drive home from Canada's west

Nothing too interesting except that we almost died near Portage. Adam was driving and we hit some black ice, spun around 3 times on the TransCanada Highway and ended up stuck in a snowy ditch at the side of the road. Two incredibly nice Manitobans (going in the opposite direction) turned around and tried to help us pull our massive van out of the snow with a Mercury Topaz. ‘A’ for effort. Then after the failed tow job, waited around with us for 45 minutes and let us sit in their warm car until the tow truck arrived. Thanks for the help. We tried to return the favor to a mother and two daughters who spun out and were stuck in a ditch somewhere around Lake Superior. But they seemed to be afraid of us. I can understand though since we’d been driving for 20 hours straight at that point and didn’t look all that Zest fully clean. –Ryan.

Calgary, AB @ The Gateway

There was a big turnout and people were loving the show, but sometimes the layout of a club can be deceptive. This was like a diner theatre show. Too many seats, too spread apart, and too many comfortable music “viewers”. But like always, there was a good number of dancing people there, enough to keep us from feeling like circus bears. Met a lot of good folks too. Fun night. –Adam.

Vancouver, BC @ Richard’s On Richards

There was a weird start to this one. Brad was meeting Adam and I at the venue around 9:30 since we were supposed to go on at 10:00. Turns out that Boy cancelled the show due to a bug that was going around and they were incredibly sick so were got a call to go on earlier. This would have been alright but we got really lost on the way to the venue, ended up in Burnaby and barely found our way to the club (we were doing the no looking at the map trick). Ended up getting there at 10:15 and everyone was kinda pissed off. We set up in record time and ended up having a really good show in the end. At the end of the night the bouncers started kicking out our friends from Pilate and people who came to see the show as they were trying to buy CD’s and shirts. I thought Vancouver was supposed to be more laid back. Damn bouncers. –Ryan. Oh yeah, we left a guitar here months ago and hell it was still here when we got back, man they are honest in Vancouver...thx dude for looking after it for us!

Nanaimo, BC @ The Queen’s

I had the same cold/flu Boy and The Waking Eyes had. This morning I walked to for an hour to a walk-in clinic that was closed due to a sick doctor. I ended up taking a cab to another clinic with a healthy doctor. I forgot my health card and had to pay $55 to get looked at. I had an ear infection, a throat infection and a sinus infection. Healthy doctor hooked me up with antibiotics. Nanaimo was a little more rough and rugged than I was expecting. Outside the venue….woman with bloody face and compassionate nurses in training. Weird day overall. –Adam.

Victoria, BC @ The Central Bar

Great turnout and fun show to play. A lot of energy in the room. Some old friends showed up as well. Victoria’s a great city to play. My favorite sweater was lost/stolen tonight from the back stage area…sucks, but what can you do? Nothing! –Adam.

Edmonton, AB @ The Starlight Room

Good show. Fun night, a lot to drink. The highlight of the night was when we found out that our van was broken into while we were playing on stage. The gentleman who broke into the van smashed a window and we learned the hard way not to rent a Ford van next tour. The window wasn’t in our coverage, so we had to replace it. While price shopping windows we learned that Ford does “custom Ford” windows and charge insane amounts of money for replacements. $1000 for a window the size of a bread box (not including installation). Mechanics were actually laughing on the phone telling Alan (tour manager) about Ford’s window scam. To the items lost: 1 bottle of red wine, 60-70 Marble Index t-shirts (so the genius thief will be wearing our shirts till the day he dies….which hopefully is sooner than later), 50 Marble Index CDs and a car power converter we use for plugging our TV and Playstation into (but my guess is you probably don’t have a car…why steal this?) Items he left, or in his state didn’t notice (and I say he because I just can’t see a girl doing it, but what do I know?)…a TV set (under a blanket), an MP3 player, a 30 disc wallet filled with DVDs and PS2 games, and a brand new bass guitar. Thief: You would’ve gotten more cash for the bass, or the TV than everything else combined. I guess you’re no scholar. I hope you cut yourself jumping through our window….If he was a smart person, it definitely would’ve been worse. Alan taped the window like a seasoned vet and off we went. –Adam.

Saskatoon, SK @ Loui’s Pub

I forget…-Adam.

The backstage area has all of these autographed promo photos from back in the day when labels would send these pics of bands out as part of a package to book them in a club. Only other bands have written little comments on top of the photos, opinions of the bands in the pictures (never positive), giant dicks were there should be none, etc… If you ever get a chance to inspect this room its good for laugh. –Ryan.

Regina, SK @ The State

Every band says the same thing about Regina. The people that go out to shows are fantastic and into the music, but it’s impossible to draw crowds in the city. The show tonight was alright. Not a lot of fun to play though….I don’t know why. I like the new floors in The State. Enough about tonight. –Adam.

Winnipeg, MB @ Cowboy’s

Terrible weather, but I guess that’s the Canadian winter norm. Snow’s okay for a couple weeks, then we all hate it. I could definitely live without slush and salt stains. Our hotel had a water slide. Pools, hot tubs and slides are always a touring bonus, except for when parents bring their five year olds into the hot tub to piss themselves…..don’t do that, it’s gross and it pisses all the adults off. Sometimes we get all sore and tired from being in a van all day, and can’t wait for the hot tub. Walk down to the pool and there’s a kindergarten class in the hot tub. Get out!! Parents should be fined for that. To the show….a lot of fun. Cowboy’s has light up stairs (think Michael Jackson video). Brad had some fun dancing around on them. Good night. Good bye. –Adam.

Decided to try to eat something not from Subway or McDonalds. Ended up going to a grocery store and buying all the ingredients to make chicken wraps. They were disgusting… I ate three. –Ryan.

Montreal, QC @ Main Hall

Today we were booked into quite possibly the smallest hotel rooms ever designed (can’t remember hotel’s name, see February 11 entry). It was comedy skit small. The show was alright. After the show we hung out with some friends and went out to a bar with a lot of dancing, serious dancing. Crazy scarf dancing performance by musically hypnotized girl. –Adam.

Ottawa, ON @ Barrymore’s

I have a confession to make. I didn’t write in my tour diary much this tour, so I can’t remember many details from the early shows…..sorry. Here’s what I remember… The on stage monitors were messed up (non-existent) for the first couple of song and I couldn’t really hear what was going on. Last half of the set was good, well; I guess the first half was too. All I know is it’s impossible to have fun and get into the show when the sound’s f*cked up, but it ended well. I really have a terrible memory. –Adam.

Hamilton, ON @ The Underground

Technically challenged show. Brad broke tons of strings, I dropped a drum sticks twice during “Not So Bright”. I never, ever drop sticks…..oh well. Nice turnout, and energetic set. Hometown shows are always a ton of fun. Best part of the night was after Brad broke a string and was out of backup guitars Rusty from The Waking Eyes handed Brad his guitar. Brad to the crowd: “I told Rusty that if he guitar techs for me I’d bring The Waking Eyes on the road with us.” –Adam.

Toronto, ON @ The Rivoli

Packed room. Line up out the door of folks trying to get in. We found out ten minutes before we went on stage that tonight’s show was being taped for a national radio broadcast. A little notice would’ve been nice, but I guess it’s nicer that people actual want to tape and air our show. Tinge of rust, but good set. I don’t know what else to say….-Adam.
